Charleston, South Carolina, is a cute coastal city in the USA that has preserved its unique heritage. Cobblestone streets, well-maintained antebellum houses, and stunning churches create a picturesque backdrop. Often called the “Holy City” due to its many historic churches, Charleston is equally known for its food scene (mmmm Southern barbecue), thriving arts culture, and moss-draped oak trees.
For fashion lovers, Charleston’s shopping scene is a delight. King Street, particularly, is renowned for its high-end boutiques, vintage shops, and designer stores. Every October, Charleston holds the annual Southern Style Now Festival, celebrating Southern fashion, art, and design with workshops, pop-up shops, and talks by designers and artists. Charleston Fashion Week, usually held in spring, is also a showcase of emerging designers, with runway shows and pop-up shops highlighting contemporary Southern style. The city’s unique blend of old-world charm and modern Southern fashion sense makes it a destination for fashion enthusiasts.
October in Charleston is particularly special and frankly still has great weather. The city hosts events like the MOJA Arts Festival, a celebration of African American and Caribbean culture, with performances, exhibits, and events throughout the city. Charleston’s ghost tours become especially popular in October, where visitors can walk through the historic neighborhoods at night, hearing spooky tales that draw from Charleston’s layered history.
We are in a panic! How did it get to be the end of October? I have a last min work event, an invite to a seance (what does one wear to a seance?!) and dressing up to give candy to the kids in the neighbourhood.
That said, we love Halloween - even if it means the turn of the season and it sets us into a last minute frenzy. I love the creativity other people have, the intense decorating that happens for a few short days, the faux cob webs and the momentary celebration of what is usually the underdogs of pop culture. Bats, snakes, spooky and scary.
While I am not one for watching a lot of horror - this Victorian seance has me totally intruiged. Every review and person I have heard that has gone says they have never been so scared and thought something might follow them home. Yikes. Maybe my outfit needs to be more cheerful or soothing to ghosts.
I usually like to find a costume that I can use my own clothes. I don't mind picking up some accessories but usually I don’t buy a whole pre-made costume. We scoured social for great examples of costumes. Any favourites?
